Case Study: The Bark Family – Building a Charitable Legacy Through a Donor-Advised Fund
Presentation Description
Case Study: The Bark Family – Building a Charitable Legacy Through a Donor-Advised Fund Albert and Edith Bark, lifelong volunteers and philanthropists, are committed to passing on their values of service and generosity. As they update their estate plan in retirement, their focus is on creating a lasting charitable legacy that involves their children and grandchildren. Central to their plan is a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), established years ago to streamline and amplify their giving. Their DAF will receive the majority of their remaining estate—retirement accounts, real estate, and other assets—and serve as the primary vehicle for distributing charitable gifts after their passing. The DAF allows them to support causes close to their hearts, including humanitarian efforts, Edith’s alma mater, and local programs addressing homelessness, hunger, and education. With the DAF as the designated beneficiary, the Barks ensure tax-efficient giving and long-term impact. This case illustrates how families can use DAFs to align estate planning with their values, engage the next generation in giving, and make a meaningful difference in the communities and causes they care about most. This case study is interactive with engaging questions for attendees.

Presentation Description
A Family Story, Cultural Competency, and Planned Giving: What Every Advisor Should Know Case Study: Peter and Charlotte Cade Philanthropic Planning in the African American Community In this presentation, we’ll unpack a myriad of topics that advisors should be aware of, and discuss how to address them to assist the Cade family. The Cade family information touches on planning challenges and the need for creative thinking when it comes to addressing their legal, tax, financial, business, and charitable giving needs: • As an advisor - what is the first thing you would do? • What concerns and issues do they have that you can assist them with? • Do you have ideas to help them achieve their goals today and in the future? The case study will show case philanthropic, estate and financial planning concepts – with the focus on philanthropy planning. The purpose is for you as advisors and gift planners to use the case study as a tool to learn, share, and practice with others in your organizations (or anywhere!). The case study was created by Aquanetta Betts, JD, CAP®, AEP®, CFRE for the Center for Philanthropy and Social Impact, The American College of Financial Services.
