Mike Bell has held leadership positions in the field of philanthropy for more than three decades. Currently, as President of Mike Bell & Associates, LLC, Mike consults with nonprofit organizations in philanthropy, strategic planning, governance, constituent engagement, and advocacy. Previously, Mike was Executive Director of Davis Health System Foundation in Elkins, West Virginia, where he also served as health system director for volunteer services and pastoral care. Prior to joining DHS, Mike served as Executive Director of Suncoast Hospice Foundation in Clearwater, Florida, and Vice President for Community Development at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, and a Master of Education in Institutional Advancement from Vanderbilt University. Mike also serves as an adjunct professor of nonprofit leadership at Davis & Elkins College and is the Board President of the Randolph County Housing Authority, immediate past President of Charitable Gift Planners of West Virginia, and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners.

Where There's a Will, There's a Way - Cultivating the Ultimate Gift

"Where There's a Will, There's a Way - Cultivating the Ultimate Gift" shows smaller foundations and development offices how to integrate planned, or legacy, giving into your organization’s overall fundraising program. Case studies will explain marketing and promotion of planned giving, as well as explore potential ethical dilemmas. Participants will learn to explain common planned gift options, and group exercises will offer an opportunity to practice starting the conversation and overcoming common donor objections.

Ignite Your Wills and Estate Planning Week Promotions

This session outlines how nonprofit organizations and local CGP Councils can maximize the impact of their Wills Week or Estate Planning Awareness Week promotions. Examples of social media campaigns, advertisements, donor resource materials, and editorial content will be shared. Participants will craft a campaign for their own organization as a part of the session.

Building a Culture of Philanthropy

Establishing philanthropy as an institutional priority engages a “cast of thousands” in various supporting roles. Leadership must leverage its visibility and prestige within the institution to promote philanthropy, continually reinforce its value, and encourage participation in resource development. This session emphasizes the unique role of the CEO, Chief Development Officer, Board members, and allied professional advisors in sustaining an effective culture of philanthropy and gift planning.
