Do SB 8, SB 9, and SB 10 provide new opportunities with our clients and donors? A case study exploring gifting opportunities using vacant land
Presentation Description
In September 2021, California's Governor Newsom signed legislation to streamline the process for cities to zone for multi-family housing and increased residential density. Now, land that may have previously been viewed as essentially unusable has potential. In this donor case study, we will explore how we can help donors and clients develop a plan with charitable components when the value of the assets is potentially $45 million and the basis is nothing.

Gifts That Went Wrong
Presentation Description
We all have that moment in our careers when a gift that seemed to be going well suddenly goes wrong, or a completed gift is now clearly in trouble. We are trained to establish a gift properly; we don't have as much experience reacting when things start to go awry. This session will examine examples of real gifts that went wrong. We'll look at fact patterns that raise red flags, and learn to communicate with donors about mistakes and challenges in ways that build confidence and trust. We'll also cover how to build gift policies and procedures that help vet gifts and donors to avoid problems as much as possible. In a profession where we’re often expected to be experts in a lot of things (real estate! stock! taxes! art! jewelry! stamps?), it's critical to navigate the complexity and figure out a path forward, even when that path requires some back-tracking.

An Interactive Exploration of Gift Acceptance Policies
Presentation Description
We've all heard about how important gift acceptance policies are but if your organization doesn't already have them or they're very outdated, how do you get started? In this session, we will look at the actual policies of some of the organizations in our region and compare and contrast how they tackle different types of gifts so that attendees can leave this session with a sense of what path may be good for their organization to move forward with for their policies. Attendees will discuss the various merits of how different policies approach topics and we will explore how we as a group think things could be improved. We'll also discuss who at your organization should be involved in the discussion about how to update your policies.
